News and Events

Each year a number of events are held at the Scottish National War Memorial. Many of these are organised in co-operation with Veterans' Associations. The Memorial is small, but there are usually some seats available to members of the public and if you would like to enquire about the availability of these seats, or if you would like to discuss or arrange a special tribute, please contact the Secretary to the Memorial. Find out more about our annual events here.

Remember that you are most welcome to visit the Memorial at any time during normal castle opening hours.

Battle of Arras Commemoration 9 April 2017

The 100th anniversary of the commencement of the Battle of Arras, was commemorated at a service in the Memorial on Sunday 9 April 2017.

Scotland had the highest concentration of Scottish troops fighting in a single battle during World War One. The average daily casualty rate was 4,076, which was higher than that at The Somme or the Third Battle of Ypres.

Of the approximate total 159,000 casualties, around a third were Scottish and of those Scots injured an estimated 18,000 lost their lives – the equivalent population of a Scottish town such as Dumbarton, Peterhead or St Andrews, or the capacity of Hearts’ ground at Tynecastle.

Memorial Annual Service 2016

The Trustees and Staff of the Memorial were honoured by a visit in July 2016 by HRH The Princess Royal who attended the Memorial's Annual Service. The Service was made particularly poignant by the laying up of a battle ensign that had been attached to the wreck of HMS Royal Oak.

HMS Royal Oak, a World War One veteran which had fought at the Battle of Jutland, was sunk by a German U Boat on 14 October 1939 whilst she was at anchor in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Nearly 900 sailors died and the wreck is still a war grave. Every year a new battle ensign is placed on the wreck by Royal Navy divers and the ensign placed the previous year is returned to the members of the Royal Oak Association.

In 2016 the Association graciously allowed the ensign to be laid up in the Memorial. The ensign was laid up by HM's Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney Mr James William Spence and two of the divers who recovered it from the wreck.

Photographs of the Annual Service can be viewed below:

The Battle of the Somme Vigil - 30 June/1 July 2016

At 0730hrs on 1 July 1916 the whistles blew and the pipes played ordering men to climb out of their trenches and cross "no-mans" land towards the German positions. So began the Battle of the Somme.

The UK Government announced on 30 November 2015 that Vigils would be held across the country to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. One of the Vigils was held in the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle overnight 30 June and 1 July 2016.

Those Scots who took part in the Battle were represented by groups of Service personnel and Veterans Groups keeping vigil, in silent watches, throughout the night around the Casket within the Shrine of the Memorial. The Casket contains the names of the over 100,000 Scots who fell in the First World War. Over 700 members of the public visited the overnight Vigil held in the War Memorial. The Vigil was manned by 20 members of the Armed Forces and over 100 members of Service Veterans groups.

The Trustees of the War Memorial thank all those members of the public who came to visit the Vigil and all the members of Armed Forces and Service Veterans Groups who supported the event.

Visit to the Memorial by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh - 3 July 2014

Summer 2014 was an especially busy time for the Trustees and staff of the Memorial, as the Centenary of the outbreak of World War One approached. The highlight of the period was the visit to the Memorial, on 3 July 2014, of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, who attended the Annual Service during which the Colours of The Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland were laid up. After a Reception held in The Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle, the Queen opened a Memorial Garden. Photographs and a video of this very special occasion are available for viewing below.

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. As well as being the season of Remembrance it's also Trustees Week - a week to showcase the work of charity trustees. The Memorial is an independent charity that exists solely upon public donations and charitable grants. A Board of Trustees is entrusted with the management of the Memorial and they employ a Chief Executive who looks after the running of the Memorial on a daily basis. We are very grateful to the Board of Trustees for their continued support in preserving the Memorial for the next generation. #lestweforget #trusteesweekThis Remembrance season you can order commemorative certificates, roll of honour extracts and other items from our online shop. All profits made go towards supporting the Memorial.

Sometimes as a result of people researching their family history or perhaps their local war memorial. Regular SNWM correspondent Pat Anderson of Forfar sent us a file for consideration for Gunner Alex Cargill, killed in action in 1916.

#wewillrememberthem #remembrance #lestweforget #fifecouncilMore exciting things happening yesterday Today marks the 10th anniversary of Merchant Navy Day.

The Rolls of Honour at the Scottish National War Memorial contain the names of 6,378 Scottish seafarers who lost their lives in both world wars. Apprentice James Reid Carr, was one of them. He was only 20 years old when he was killed on 21st September 1940. His ship SS BARON BLYTHSWOOD in convoy HX-72 was hit amidships by one torpedo from U-99. She sank within 40 seconds. The master, 33 crew members and one gunner were lost in the freezing waters south of Iceland.

Today approximately 95% of all goods imported to and from the UK travel by sea. Today is an opportunity to recognise the sacrifices made by merchant seafarers in keeping world trade moving.Fantastic to be a guest at the #edinburghtattoo last night as one of their charity partners. A brilliant performance by the cast and team, thank you for a wonderful evening. Please note the Memorial will be temporarily closed on the morning of Friday 15th August as we commemorate VJDay 80 and will reopen at approx 1330.Truly a pleasure to meet Mary Forbes and her Grandaughter Aimee (pictured) today and show them around the Memorial.

They brought with them a letter from the front line written by Commanding Officer of Mary's husband's Great Uncle - Pte George Fairholm Forbes. George was killed in WWI and he is listed in our Rolls of Honour. The very moving letter from his CO reads:

Exciting day yesterday at the Memorial as we kicked off our film project in conjunction with @morayhouseuoe and Dr Paul Hamilton @_paulhamilton. Huge thanks to Lochgelly High School and @edinburghtrinityseacadets @seacadetsleith for coming along to support us!

The project is supported financially by The MacRobert Trust and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo @edinburghtattoo and we are extremely grateful to them for their assistance. Please note the Memorial will be temporarily closed on Tuesday 15th July until 1130am.A few images from our Annual Service of Commemoration earlier this month.
