Leaving the City behind, cross the Castle Esplanade, pass through the Gatehouse and begin your steep climb up the Castle Hill.

To your right there are spectacular views over the city, the River Forth and the hills beyond. But keep going under Foogs Gate until you reach Crown Square. Around you are the great buildings at the heart of Edinburgh Castle. Turn north towards the Firth of Forth and there in front of you is the Scottish National War Memorial.
