| Rona | Larsen | NZ | Kia ora my name is Rona Larsen(nee Baillie) and I live in beautiful Aotearoa/New Zealand. My grandfather was Pte James Baillie 2/Royal Scots -6966-1914. This is what's written on his 1914 Star. James and his wife Jessie and their two children(Robert-my Dad and May my Auntie)lived in Glasgow and emigrated to New zealand in 1920-21.My father never came home to Scotland before he died in 2004 and I'm endeavouring to find out more about my grandad James Baillie and as well relatives in Scotland. While I was quite young when he died I always remember him as a kind and honourable gentleman who I would love to find out more about. I have contemplated for years in changing back to my maiden name Baillie to honour my father and grandfather and the scottish side of my ancestry and heritage. My decision is made and I will be doing so in tne next few months. James Baillie now has a great grandson(Mark) and little great grandson(Jack) almost 1 year old who proudly carry the Baillie name. James' memorabilia have been given to me and it is my intention to pass what I have on to his great grandson(Jack) once I've restored his medals to their former glory and can give to Jack and his Dad,Mark Baillie a more informed history of James Baillie and our ancestry and heritage. Also my son Michael Larsen(James' great grandson) is in the UK at present and has fallen in love with Scotland(been 3 times already)-the country of his grandad Robert Baillie who lived with us for the last 13 years of his life. Robert was a wonderful role modei for my son and taught him a lot. If it is at all possible to find out more before Michael comes home to Aotearoa/New Zealand before beginning of October 2009. I realise this is most probably more of a message than what you normally receive however just recently I got Grandad Baillie's medals out and examined them more closely to find the inscription on the back of the 1914 Star. It is my intention too to travel to Scotland in the near future to research more. However to have some more signposts and places to go and people to talk to it could well be more comprehensive journey of unearthing our Baillie family history and geaneology/whakapapa.:):) God Bless and Arohanui to you all in Scotland. I hope you can help. Rona Larsen:):) |

| Monica | Williams | US | I have been to the memorial several times, but I was showing it to a friend at work, it never fails to leave me in awe |
| Ann | Donaldson | UK | The War Memorial is a suitable place for remembering the brave men and women who gave everything for us. My Grandfather served in both World Wars -at sea - and survived. My Dad, a Normandy veteran, was wounded, but survived. His younger brother, Henry Scott Paterson, of the F.A.A. was killed just about his 21st birthday. He was a promising young architect and pianist. Thank you for helping keep his memory alive. |
